"Spam" Defined
Spam is a type of email that endangers the very existence of the email system by threatening to overwhelm it with a massive and uncontrollable volume of messages. Spam usually takes the form of advertising or promotional material that arrives in your email box without you having requested it. UBE (Unsolicited Bulk Email) and UCE (Unsolicited Commercial Email) are terms that are often used to describe different types of spam
The Awecomm Spam Filter uses a point system to identify and flag messages as spam.
Our point system is rather complex, and can be difficult to interpret. Simplified, if an incoming message contains certain attributes, it may be flagged as spam if it carries more than 6 points on our point scale. For instance, some of the more heavily weighted items on the list are as follows:
Unfortunately, the battle against spam is an ongoing one. We are constantly tweaking our spam filters to maximize their effectiveness, and people who create spam are constantly changing the content of their messages to bypass the filters. For that reason, it's impossible to implement a solution that will flag ALL junk mail. We also need to be careful not to go so far as to flag valid emails as spam. As you can see, we walk a fine line regarding what is and is not spam.
A common misconception is that viruses are spam. The truth is that viruses are not spam and can easily slip through filters. With normally short subject lines and little content, it is difficult to flag them as spam.
