WIFI security is one of those things that gets overlooked by many organizations. We don’t think an attack could happen to us, so we set up WIFI and let it go. Often, we end up giving out our passwords to anyone that happens to come into our office.

WIFI security is critical for data protection and to limit the probability that outsiders have access to your confidential business information.  Often, small to medium size companies have guests, vendors, strangers and employees all on the same WIFI connection.   This scenario lets outsiders and hackers have access to your company’s ERP system, email, confidential files and passwords.   Company owners and CEOs would not let these people into their offices to go through files and sit down at their desk, so they should not continue to allow others to have unnecessary access to their electronic infrastructure.

WIFI BEST practices include:

  • Have one connection for guests and another connection for internal employees.
  • A guest connection should have an easy password for guests to use to connect and should enable them only to get internet access.
  • An internal connection should be used for employees and allow them access to internal data, company email and internet as deemed appropriate.
  • An internal connection should have a more complicated password or, for even more security, require the employee to log in to their computers with an individual password to access this connection.

Creating two different connections will allow your data to be secure, while still giving visitors a place to connect and get work done.
